In Kakamega County, Navakholo Sub County lies a humble Kenyan being, it takes you to drive a distance of 376KM from Nairobi to Kakamega while from Kampala to Kakamega, it is a distance of 286KM if you are to find this boy.
His name is Dolvine Lumumba, the young Kenyan dancing sensation aged 10 years and currently in grade three at Eshilakwe primary school.
Eshilakwe a public mixed day primary school has over 800 pupils and it is found in North Butsotso Division particularly the Lurambi North Zone of Navakholo Sub County.
According to Teacher.ac a website writing about Kenyan schools, the school has 14 government-aided teachers and 3 of them are supported by the board of management of the school, and a shortage of 5 teachers.
Branice Njaya, a source privy to Lumumba’s humble life, the boy hails from a humble family staying with his parents Christine and Mr. Lumumba who work on people’s farms to earn a living.
“Both parents are not fully employed and live in absolute poverty. His parents struggle with school fees and general family upkeep,” she described.
According to Branice, Lumumba’s talent for dancing has been noticeable and he was identified by his music teacher when she told them to dance in class and it was recorded on her mobile phone before it went viral on social media.
“The teacher recorded a short video clip of him dancing and showed it to colleagues. His class teacher, later on, called him outside and asked him to dance as he recorded. The teacher then shared the video on his Tiktok account where it went viral,” she said.
Branice explained that Lumumba likes dancing for fun and he could freely express himself without being forced as he even joins dancers on road shows to exhibit his skills and dance with them.
Recently in the 2016/17 financial year’s budget, Kakamega County Governor H.E Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya challenged residents to take advantage of government education sponsorship programs and ensure that qualified learners benefit accordingly.
The Governor announced that his government has disbursed KSh120 Million equally, from the 2016/17 financial year’s budget, in all the 60 wards to support bright but needy students in acquiring secondary education.
The Governor encouraged parents and guardians to help their children access this funding adding that the government will 2017 sponsor twelve best students from across the twelve sub-counties to further their studies outside the country in institutions of their choice.
Meanwhile, Lumumba is far yet to tap into this opportunity, given his age and social status, or perhaps he would when another opportunity pops in. In 2016, the sponsorship program saw ten students leave for China as two chose the University of Nairobi and Maseno University.
